Àkókó:
Àkókós are
found inOndo State and Edo State. Akoko division in Ondo State is made up of 4
local Government areas namely-Àkòkò south West, Àkòkò South East, Àkókó North
West, Àkókó North East. New Yam Festival is a common cultural activity
prevalent among the Àkókó people in Ondo State The Àkókó Edo’s are not excluded
but the celebration is not as pronounced as in Àkókó in Ondo state.
Àkókó people do celebrate new yam as agrarian
communities. Each community/Town/ village has specific date for the
celebration. The 2016 celebration is unique in the sense that climate change
affected the farm product yet the people still celebrate the New Yam Festival
on the scheduled dates. Most communities see the date as an auspicious date to
be grateful to God for spearing their lives to witness another year. The
question is: are the people celebrating New Year or New Yam?
